Five Everton youngsters in England U21s squad

Five Everton players were named in the England Under-21 squad for their upcoming friendly matches against Poland and Germany.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Tom Davies, Jonjoe Kenny, Ademola Lookman and Kieran Dowell were called up by Aidy Boothroyd as his team continue their build up to this summer’s European Under-21 Championship in Italy and San Marino.

The young Lions side will take on Poland at Ashton Gate on Thursday 22 March, before Bournemouth’s Vitality Stadium hosts their clash with Germany on Tuesday March 26 (both matches kick off at 7.45pm).

Keane details what Everton need to do to beat Chelsea

Everton must show the same level of intensity against Chelsea on Sunday at Goodison Park as they did against Liverpool, according to Michael Keane.

“We have played really well against Chelsea and defended strongly,” Keane told evertontv.

“They are a good team with a lot of top-quality players, so we will have to be really on it like we were against Liverpool.

“Hopefully we can score a few goals, as well, and win the game.

“The derby was the best atmosphere I’ve played in at Everton. When the fans are like that it really helps us – but we know we have to play well to get them behind us even more.

“We will do everything we can to make sure we do that, we are really hungry for a win and need to beat one of the top teams at home – and we want to do that on Sunday.”

Southgate backs Pickford to benefit from coming under scrutiny

England manager Gareth Southgate insists Jordan Pickford will benefit from coming under scrutiny of late.

“We don’t have many English goalkeepers playing, all of those that are playing have had moments and spells of good form, making good saves and days when they have not been so good,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live and TalkSPORT.

“Jordan has been our first choice for the recent period so it is probably the first time he has felt that spotlight a little bit more intensely.

“That is good for his development. He is a young goalkeeper still who needs to respond in the right way to the comments and observations that have been made.

“We are looking forward to working with him next week. In our environment he has worked well and had a consistent level of achievement.”

Pickford’s performances in an England shirt are enough to keep the manager happy with his contribution for now as he called on the Blues keeper to keep pushing on.

“Jordan has played extremely well for us,” he said.

“I think you could look at any of the players across the squad and say they’ve had moments where they’ve played well and moments where they’ve had difficult afternoons. No question that was the case for Jordan at the weekend.

“But if I look at what he’s done with us, and when you’re picking your squad there has to be an element of what they are doing with their club and an element of what they’re doing and have done with us – his performances with us have been excellent.

“I’m never keen to say that ‘this player is the number one, and that’s it’, and ‘this player in that position is our number one choice’ because you’ve always got to have competition for places.

“But, we’re pleased with what Jordan’s done and we’ve got to help him through what was hopefully a blip at the weekend. Like everybody else, he has to train well and perform well.”

Passionate call to arms

Lyon 'interested in Gueye'

Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye has reportedly emerged as a target for Lyon ahead of the summer transfer window.

Paris Saint-Germain attempted to sign the 29-year-old midfielder in January and tabled two bids towards the end of the month in order to secure him however the Blues right stood firm in their stance that the Ligue 1 leaders offers were too low.

Gueye recently indicated that he is hopeful that Everton could think again and allow him to leave if a Champions League club make a move for him in the summer.

And it seems he could have one more French suitor in the summer, as according to French outlet Buzzsport.fr, Lyon are considering signing the former Lille midfielder in the coming months.

We know that the Toffees are interested in Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombele but it remains to be seen if this will have nay impact.Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye has reportedly emerged as a target for Lyon ahead of the summer transfer window.
