Williams urges Bafana fans to get over his Brazil massacre

2019-03-14 08:40

Cape Town - SuperSport United goalkeeper Ronwen Williams has urged Bafana Bafana supporters to forget about his performance in the 5-0 defeat to Brazil in 2014.

Williams is in the South Africa squad to face Libya later this month in a crucial Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.

The United shot-stopper has not been at his best for the national team, but he did play decently in a second half showing against Paraguay in November last year.

The 27-year-old said: "People keep speaking about the Brazil game. That happened five years ago. I've played other games for Bafana. Our last Bafana game was against Paraguay and I played in the second half.

"People don't speak about that. I played my part in the goal with my distribution, but people don't see that.

"But that's part of the game and that's how things go. They say you are as good as your last game and I will take confidence out of the game second half I played against Paraguay. I kept a clean and played my part in the goal.

"Coach Stuart believes in me, I've worked with and I know what he expects. Like I've said before, I know I've not had the best Bafana career before, I've conceded a lot of goals, but I can't start doubting myself now.

"I'm the only one that can believe in myself. If given the opportunity, I need to claim it."

The fixture will take place on Sunday, March 24 at the Stade Taieb Mhiri in Tunisia, with kick-off at 18:00 (SA time).

South Africa are currently in second place in Group E on 9 points while Nigeria have accumulated 10 points and have already qualified despite having to still play the Seychelles

Libya (7 points) find themselves with a chance to head to Egypt in June for the tournament - but only if they beat Bafana Bafana.

Baxter's charges only need a point (a draw or win) to qualify.

Meanwhile, the draw for the 24-team tournament will take place on Friday, April 12.
