A man was cheated of around Rs 96,000 by three people after he was offered a shared ride in an autorickshaw near the Gurugram bus terminal, the police said on Thursday.

The victim’s bag had about Rs 20,000 in cash and the rest was taken from the victim’s bank account using his ATM card, which was in the bag, said assistant sub-inspector Anil Kumar, who is the investigating officer in the case. An FIR for theft and cheating was filed at the Sector 14 police station on Wednesday.

On March 7, Ramayan Singh, 48, who works as a painter with a private company in Naurangpur in Gurugram district, wanted to go to Delhi to catch a bus to his village in Uttar Pradesh.

“He got out at the Gurugram bus terminal and was looking for a ride to go to Anand Vihar. One of the suspects, who posed as a driver, offered him a ride,” the ASI said.

Police said there were two other men in the autorickshaw. A few minutes into the ride, the suspect told him the vehicle had broken down and asked him to push it.

When the victim stepped out, the suspect sped away with his bag. “Singh went to his village and realised the suspects had withdrawn Rs 76,000 from his bank account,” the ASI said.

Singh then came back to the city and filed a police complaint on Wednesday. The police said that it was not clear how the accused came to know about his ATM PIN. There have been around 20 cases in 2019 of people being offered shared rides and later robbed, at gunpoint or by threatening them to reveal their ATM PIN.
