Paruthipattu lake near Avadi, once a neglected waterbody, will soon become a sought-after recreational space in the neighbourhood.
Work to improve the lake as an eco-park on the lines of the waterbody in Chetpet is likely to be completed by this month-end, officials said.
With a 3-km-long walking track around the bund ready, several residents of Avadi have started using a portion of the lake for morning walks. Spread over 22 hectares, the waterbody now sports a new look as the eco-restoration project is being given final touches.
Second facility
Located 23 km away from the city, this would serve as a public gathering space particularly for the suburbs starved of entertainment. Once it is thrown open for use, it could be the second eco-park int the city and its neighbourhood after the one in Chetpet.
Residents of Avadi noted that rejuvenation of the lake was a long-pending need. E. Anbu, vice-chairman, Federation of Consumer Organisations, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, said “We either have to travel to city or Tiruvallur district for recreation. Two more parks have been developed close to the lake. Pollution of the lake would be prevented.”
Officials of the Water Resources Department, which is implementing the ₹28- crore project, said most works had been completed except for the children’s play area and seating arrangement around the lake and walking track.
Two major issues that affected the water body — encroachments and sewage pollution — have been addressed through the project. Most of the encroachments, except for a few in Periyar Nagar, have been removed, officials said. As the lake has been deepened for better storage, it would serve as a groundwater recharge source for surrounding areas, including Govardhanagiri.
Greenery planned
Nearly 35 varieties of plants are being planted around the lake. Besides the central plaza where people can relax, a refreshment block has also been built.
“Birds have already started visiting the two mudflats created in the lake bed. The lake would also have boat deck facilities for visitors to enjoy boat rides. The work would be taken up by the Avadi municipality,” said an official.
