Marvel has hired a director for its first Asian-led superhero film
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is getting a whole lot bigger!
Marvel Studios hired Short Term 12 filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton to direct the upcoming Shang-Chi film, which will be the studio’s first superhero film featuring an Asian lead, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Shang-Chi’s film was reported in December with the character known for his martial art skills and as the Master of Kung-Fu. Cretton is set to direct the film having already worked with Captain Marvel’s Brie Larson on Short Term 12 and The Glass Castle.
He’s currently working with Larson and Black Panther star Michael B. Jordan on Just Mercy, which also stars Jamie Foxx.

According to THR, Marvel is set on casting a primarily Asian-American and Asian cast for the film, with Wonder Woman 1984 screenwriter Dave Callaham set to write the screenplay.
The news comes as Captain Marvel has raked in $524 million at the worldwide box office. The studio is also gearing up for major releases this summer including Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home.
