  • Governor-General Peter Cosgrove revealed the revelation during an interview

As the best racehorse in the world, it is unsurprising that Winx has been given the royal seal of approval.

The Queen, a well-known racing fan, expressed her wish to see the championship mare race on British soil.

But in what must be a fairly rare occurrence, she was told 'no' by Winx's protective owners.

Governor-General Peter Cosgrove made the startling revelation during an interview segment on Sunrise on Thursday morning.

Reporter Sam Mac urged Sir Peter to divulge something about Her Majesty that was not common knowledge.

'Well she wanted Winx to go race in the UK,' Mr Cosgrove said.

'And I conveyed that to the ownership and they came back with "sorry your majesty".'

'Wow, someone said no to her majesty?' a baffled Sam said.

'Well, they found that Winx wasn't available,' Mr Cosgrove added.

Just moments earlier,  Sir Peter gave Sunrise a tour through Government House in Canberra and had stated that the Queen herself was one of the many famous faces that had stood in the living room.

The Queen owns over 10 racehorses frequently attends race meets such as Royal Ascot, in Berkshire, England.

As of 2013, horses owned by the Queen have won over 1,600 races - including all British Classic Races, excluding the Epsom Derby.

Winx has won her past 31 races and has entertained Australian audiences with winning performances since 2014.

She was the first horse in history to win the Cox Plate four times and is the leading Australasian money-earner in history - estimated to be worth almost $24 million.

However, after her most recent race at Randwick Racecourse in March, trainer Chris Waller fought back tears as he admitted 'the sun was going down' on her incredible career.

Her 'finale' seven-year campaign is set to follow her traditional path in 2019, wrapping up with the Queen Elizabeth Stakes during The Championships on April 13.
