The district SVEEP committee organised a rally to create awareness among women voters in Belagavi on Wednesday.
Women voters, most of them first-time voters, walked from Rani Channamma Circle to Kumar Gandharva Hall near the city corporation. They shouted slogans to create awareness about increased voting and effective participation in the poll process.
Deputy Commissioner S.B. Bommanahalli, who addressed the youth, said that the number of women voters was increasing every year due to increased education level and awareness. In the last Assembly polls, the number of women voters in the district was slightly more than that of men, he said. He urged voters to express their opinion without fear or favour. He pointed out that nearly one-third of the voters were young men and women.
Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer K.V. Rajendra urged voters not to be swayed by narrow interests such as caste or religion of candidates while exercising their franchise. Deputy Commissioners of Police Seema Latkar and Yashodha Vantagodi flagged off the march.
