THANE: Mumbra police have booked a woman doctor, who has a degree in Unani medicine, on charges of a botched-up abortion resulting in the death of a woman.
According to the police, the accused, Jahida Anwar Hafiz, carried out the abortion on the victim, Salma Shaikh, 34, of Mumbra. However, Shaikh developed complications and died at Nair Hospital on May 19, 2016.
The complainant in the case is sub-inspector Shravan Shinde who has stated a case of accidental death was registered in 2016. The victim's tissues were sent for a medical examination to JJ Hospital where a five- member team of doctors was formed to go into the case, the FIR stated.
Last month, the Mumbra police got the committee report based on which it registered an offence against the doctor. The doctor has been booked for culpable homicide not amounting murder and also for violation of the abortion rules.
Inspector RB Valatkar said, "We have issued a notice to the accused doctor and we will record her statement first. The accused has claimed she did not conduct the abortion."
The deceased's husband, Shabir Shaikh, 34, who works as an AC mechanic, has five children to look after now. "I have been following the case for the past three years and I was made to run from pillar to post for justice for my wife.
After three years they have registered an offence, but there has been no action against the accused doctor." Mumbra police have registered offences under sections 304A, and 420 of the IPC and also under section 5 of the Medical Abortion Act.
