CHANDIGARH: A man was allegedly battered to death by his wife’s brother, just four months after his inter-caste marriage, in a village of Tohana subdivision of Fatehabad district.

Gurmit Singh, a resident of Nangla, succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at PGI in Chandigarh on Tuesday, five days after he was attacked with rods by his wife’s brother. He had married Jyoti, from another caste, just four months back against the wishes of her family.

Acting on the complaint of Gurmit’s elder brother Manjit Singh, Tohana police have arrested his brother-in-law Sandeep Kumar and taken him in remand for questioning.

Meanwhile, Jyoti too has sought police protection. Her cousin Vijay had allegedly threatened the couple of dire consequences, following which the couple had approached the police. A case in this regard was also registered at Sadar police station.

On Friday, Gurmit and Manjit were on their way to Tohana from their village on a two-wheeler, when they were forcibly stopped by Sandeep and his two friends near Bidhai Khera. The three accused hit the brothers with iron and wooden rods, leaving Gurmit with grievous head injuries.

Gurmit was rushed to the civil hospital, from where he was referred to the PGI, Chandigarh, after his condition deteriorated. Meanwhile, his family members and villagers blocked the Fatehabad road, demanding the arrest of the accused and also accused the police of going slow in the case.

However, police officials have denied the charges, saying a case under attempt to murder was registered on Saturday, which was later converted into a murder case. One accused has been arrested and others would nabbed soon, they said.
