NRI accuses brother of duping him of Rs 3 crore

KARNAL: An NRI has accused his brother of duping him of Rs 3 crore by tranferring his land in the name of his sons. The police have registered a case against Avtar Singh and his son Jasmeet Singh and Harpreet Singh, all residents of Model Town, Karnal, under various section

Police said NRI complainant Hardip Singh had moved to the US in 1971. He owned agricultural land in village Rukanpur of Karnal. The agriculture land of his younger brother Avtar Singh adjoins his, as it was part of same ancestral property.

In his complaint, Hardip said that he had come to Karnal in April 2001 and executed a general power of attorney in favor of his brother Avtar for looking after his agriculture land as well as for finalizing the sale of a shop cum office (SCO No. 27) in sector 7C on Madhya Marg in Chandigarh. While Avtar deposited the amount realized from the same of Chandigarh property in Hardip’s account in 2002, he had never paid the annual rent for using his agriculture land.


“Our eldest brother Gursharan Singh came to know that about 11 months back, Avtar had transferred my agriculture land vide relinquishment deed No. 6295 dated October 20, 2006, in favor of his sons Jasmeet Singh and Harpreet Singh by misusing my power of attorney. When I came to know about it, I talked to my brother Avtar on phone several times from the US. He agreed to return my land in my name. I then came to Karnal in February 2O19 and met my brother Avtar. I asked about the return of my agriculture land as well as for the amount due on account of use of my land for the past many years, but he refused,” Hardip told police .


He had never authorized Avtar to transfer his ancestral agricultural land to anyone by any mode in which his own two sons had right by the factum of their birth. The value of my land is about 3 crore, the complaint read. The lease amount in the vicinity in such as land is not less than Rs 40,000 to Rs 45,000/- per acre per annum.


He alleged that all the three accused threatened to kill him in the presence of Gursharan. Civil Lines SHO Vijay Kumar said that they had registered a case against Avtar and his two sons Jasmeet and Harpreet and investigating the matter.
