NEW DELHI: A notorious carjacker who had been targeting SUVs late at night has been arrested by the Crime Branch after a shootout. The accused has been identified as Vimhanshu Sharma alias Happy.
The cops got on Happy’s trail after his name figured in a sensational carjacking reported from Mundka area in west Delhi. Happy and his aides had intercepted the driver of a Huyndai Creta SUV and robbed him of his belongings. They then tied him up with a muffler and dumped him near Bapdola village in southwest Delhi before fleeing with the vehicle.
In another incident, the gang snatched a Volkswagen Vento at gunpoint from an advocate in Dwarka sector 23 three months ago. In this case, a reward of Rs 25,000 was declared by the police.
Last year, they had snatched another Creta from a person who had got down to relieve himself in Dwarka (north) area. Before that, they had got away with an i20 from a property dealer in Saket.
On January 16, Happy and his associates gunned down a youth named Animesh over an enmity. The youth was shot six times in his face and chest at his home in Manglapuri in southwest Delhi. A reward of Rs 50,000 was declared for Happy’s arrest in this case.
On Tuesday, Happy was on his way allegedly to kill the complainant and the witness in this case when cops got a sniff of the plot. Sub-inspector Surendra Sharma received a tipoff that Happy would be crossing Dabri-Gurgaon Road around 9pm on March 12.
“A team, led by ACP Jasbir Singh and inspector Ritesh, was constituted and a trap laid. A white-coloured Creta was spotted and flagged down. However, the driver stepped on the gas. The car was blocked by police vehicles from both sides after which it hit the divider,” DCP Rajesh Deo said.
On being asked to surrender, he opened fire at the team. The cops retaliated but no one was hurt. The police seized a .32 bore pistol and a live cartridge. Happy told police that he was working for jailed gangster Naveen Khati and his gang had been extorting money from cable operators and bookies in Delhi on Khati’s instructions.
