BENGALURU: The airport authorities are all set to hire a mobile mist cannon machine in a bid to tackle dust pollution at the site where Kempegowda International Airport’s expansion activities are going on.

Used primarily by mining and construction companies, the mist cannon machine is designed to tackle dust emissions and prevent respiratory troubles among workers. The machine shoots a stream of small water droplets into the air which then mix with the dust particles and reduce the number of air-borne pollutants.

At KIA, the authorities have planned to hire a mobile version of this machine, which can be mounted on a truck and remotely and manually rotated to spray water in different directions up to a distance of 30-50m.

“As the construction works are in progress and due to the plying of vehicles and uninterrupted flow of wind, it is proposed to hire truck-mounted mist cannon machine for controlling the emission of dust,” reads the tender document recently published by Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), operator of the KIA, inviting companies to come forward and supply the machine.

Works pertaining to the construction of a second runway, a new terminal, expansion of access roads and internal road infrastructure, utilities and construction of a multi-modal transport hub (MMTH), are currently being carried out at KIA as part of phase two of the airport’s expansion plans.
