The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has barred passengers from carrying bottles or packets of alcohol while travelling on Namma Metro. So far, commuters were allowed to carry two sealed alcohol bottles and packets, but this will no longer the case.
Security staff have started enforcing the rule strictly, and notices have been put up at stations.
B.L. Yeshwanth Chavan, Chief Public Relations Officer, BMRCL, said that the decision was taken a few months ago. “Carrying alcohol bottles and packets strictly prohibited in metro. Liquor falls under the category of flammable items, which include petroleum, all kinds of spirits, and wet batteries,” he said.
According to metro staff, a good number of metro passengers are still unaware of the new rules. A security staff at Cubbon Park station said, “Earlier, we use to send back passengers carrying open bottles. Now, there is total prohibition.”
Another personnel said that in the past there were instances of people consuming liquor in rest rooms after being allowed to take sealed liquor bottles inside the station.
