The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday alleged that the staff of a call centre hired by it to inform Delhiites about the electoral roll was being harassed by the Delhi police.
AAP leader Atishi said the party had started a campaign to inform Delhiites that their names had been struck off the rolls by calling them, for which it had hired a call centre.
While AAP claims 30 lakh names have been struck off the rolls, data from the Chief Electoral Officer of Delhi shows there has been an increase of electors since the last Lok Sabha elections in 2014.
Ms. Atishi, however, alleged that the police had been “harassing” the call centre workers by calling them in for questioning.
Informing voters
“Since the BJP’s strategy of voter deletion has been exposed, they are now trying to use the Delhi police to harass call centres. When AAP is saying openly that we have hired the call centres to inform voters, then why are staff of call centres being called for questioning?” she asked.
The police had lodged a case on February 10 after the CEO received complaints about misleading calls telling voters that their names had been struck off the rolls, when in fact they had not.
The case is being investigated by Delhi Police Crime Branch. When asked, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Rajiv Ranjan refused to comment on the matter.
Sources said that two persons were called in for questioning as part of investigation and were later let off.
