Clever mum-of-four uses a $12 PET hammock from Kmart to keep the backseat of her car clean and crumb-free all year round

  • A mum has revealed how a pet hammock doubles as a way to keep her car clean
  • She says the trick has put an end to the mess her kids make in the back seat
  • The pet accessory costs a mere $12 and is available from budget retailer Kmart

A mother-of-four has revealed how she keeps her car clean all year round by using a $12 pet hammock from Kmart.

Rebecca Vitukawalu from Mt Isa, Queensland, recently took to social media to share a snap showing how the accessory could be used to capture all manner of back seat messes caused by her kids.

She simply slips the hammock over the top of the front headrests and then secures it in place with an adjustable strap.

The hammock part then slides under the children's car seats and the weight of the children keep it in place.

Mrs Vitukawalu told Better Homes and Gardens the hack was ideal for a 'neat freak' such as herself and made keeping her car clean a breeze.

'Now my boys can enjoy a snack without me having to vacuum the car each day,' she said.

'Then I just slide it out, shake it off, give it a wipe over and pop it back on.'

She also said the hammock helps ease the problem of red countryside dust getting caught in car crevices.

'In Mount Isa, we have lots of red dust so the hammock is fantastic as it keeps the dust out of the carpet and seats. It's a huge time saver.'

Her trick has struck a chord with many other mums on the Facebook group Kmart Hacks & Decor who've been quick to remark on the brilliance of her simple idea.

'OMG you are a genius!' Wrote one commenter.

Another said: 'I reckon it's a good idea, stops food, rubbish etc from getting rubbed into the seats and floor.'

Although many on the thread appeared excited by the inexpensive hack, there were also some who warned against it.

'In [the] event of an accident your car seats will not be covered by your insurance,' cautioned one.

'I was told that you cannot put any fabric under a car seat,' said another.

'A lot of car rental companies say to put sheets or towels under car seats to protect the leather from damage etc but this is not right to do.'
