PUNE: A woman corporator allegedly slapped a woman doctor for not tending to a patient in need of medical care at the state-run Sassoon General Hospital’s casualty department early on Wednesday.
The doctor has filed a complaint against the corporator from Bhavani Peth with the Bund Garden police.
“Our woman doctor was administering emergency medical care to patients when the woman corporator came into the casualty department with her patients,” said the dean of the hospital Muralidhar Tambe, a senior medical expert.
Upon entering the casualty department, the corporator sought to know why the doctor wasn’t tending to a patient already lying there before she (corporator) arrived with her patients. In fact, the patient’s injuries had promptly been sutured before the corporator had arrived and he was being readied for some radiological tests, Tambe explained.
“The corporator misunderstood the doctor was neglecting the patient and started shooting a video of the work inside the casualty department on her cell phone. When the doctor told her not to do so and covered the camera with her hand, the corporator manhandled and slapped her,” Tambe said.
The incident took place at around 12.30am on Wednesday.
The Bund Garden police have registered an offence against the corporator under sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his/her duty), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and 506 (criminal breach of trust) of the IPC. “We are yet to arrest the corporator,” said an officer from the Bund Garden police. Despite repeated attempts, the corporator could not be reached for comment.
