If a student is not able to score above 33% in the March evaluation process and fails in the re-examination, he/she could be held back in the same class from this session. (HT)

A total of 37,781 students of Class 5 and 8 will appear for the evaluation process at 965 centres in the district from March 12 to 22. As many as 18,521 students of Class 5 and 19,261 of Class 8 will appear for the Punjabi and English examination on Tuesday.

Students of around 80 government middle schools will take the examination at nearby centres as all these schools have less than 20 students studying in Class 8. To make optimum use of resources, the Punjab education department had directed the district education officers to send these students to other centres.

After a gap of eight years, the Punjab education department has decided to conduct the evaluation process for Class 5 and 8. If a student is not able to score above 33% in the March evaluation process and fails in the re-examination, he/she could be held back in the same class from this session.

Written orders in this regard were issued by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), director, Inderjit Singh after the higher authorities decided to implement the amended Right to Education Act from the current session (2019-20).

The district education officers and school heads across the state have been informed regarding the decision.

Singh said, “We will not expel any student till class 8 even if he/she fails. The students will get another chance to improve their performance in June.”

Since 2014, the schools were holding the evaluation process for Classes 5 and 8 and students were given grades between ‘A’ (more than 80%) and ‘E’ (less than 33%). Students were not held back even if they got an ‘E’ grade and were “identified for remedial coaching and extra attention”. Moreover, only the grades (and not marks) are revealed to the students and parents.

However, from this session onwards, if a student of Class 5 and 8 is not able to score above 33% in the March evaluation process he/she will get a chance to re-appear in the examination in the first week of June. In case the child is not able to pass in the re-examination, then the school head can hold back the child in Class 5 and 8. However, no child will be expelled from school till the completion of elementary education.
