950kg banned gutka products seized in 5 days

Tirupur: Police have seized 950kg banned tobacco products from two different places in the city and arrested five people involved in the illegal trade in the past five days.

The city police had earlier formed special teams to nab illegal wholesale dealers of banned gutka products to stem its flow to the city. On March 9, the 15 Velampalayam police conducted raids at two godowns at Thiagi Kumaran Colony and seized 700kg banned tobacco products. Police said the godowns were run by Om Prakash, of Rajasthan, and he along with two others - Suresh and Pappu - were involved in the sale of banned tobacco products. All the three were arrested.


On Tuesday, the Anupparpalayam police received a tip that tobacco products were brought from Somanur in Coimbatore and stored in Pommanaickenpalayam in the city. They located the godown and seized 250kg banned gutka items. Two people - Leela Ram, 28, and Gopal Singh, 29 - from Rajasthan were also arrested. tnn
