MUMBAI: An ENT specialist from Powai has become the latest victim of an insurance fraud when fake telecallers made her transfer money to an account, claiming that her insurance policy would lapse if she waited for the premium to be deducted through electronic clearing service (ECS). The 62-year-old woman, who requested anonymity, was duped of Rs 1.35 lakh on March 6 after the telecaller gave all details of her policy which she had provided to the company insurance firm.
She got calls from two people-Anita Kothari and Rehan-who said they were executives of Max Life Insurance and told her that premium payment date was on Tuesday. "The fraudsters said the policy would lapse as payment through ECS takes time," the doctor told TOI.
She was at her clinic when she got the fake calls between noon and 4pm. "A probe is on to know if customer data was leaked from the insurance firm that helped the fraudsters dupe people," said an officer. The victim learnt she was duped as the insurance firm said they never call anyone for payment. Senior inspector of Powai police station, Anil Pophale, said: "People must realise that such firms never call customers for any details."
