4 farmers to be honoured at Kisan Mela
TNN | Mar 13, 2019, 07:28 ISTLudhiana: The Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) will honour four progressive farmers on the first day of Kisan Mela on Friday for excellence in agriculture and allied occupations.
Youngest farm entrepreneur
Rohit Gupta (26) — the youngest farmer entrepreneur from Jalandhar has installed northern India’s first commercial aquaponic system eight months ago. Rohit is doing high density fish farming, along with growing high density vegetables, using soil-less media, which are safe to eat.
Gupta said: “It is an eco-friendly project where there is no wastage of water, as water is being re-circulated in both the projects. Moreso, fish manure is used as natural fertilizer. There are 20,000 fish in the system along with high density vegetation in 720sq m, whereas in traditional open pond fish farming, 15,000 fish are being stocked in 4,000sq m. So, I am benefiting a lot more than in traditional farming. Apart from this, no water is being wasted in the system. My annual revenue from fish farming is almost Rs20 lakh, and Rs2.5 lakh from vegetable produce.”
Rohit has done his bachelors degree, and his father is a cloth merchant.
Mushroom cultivation
Pardeep Singh from Nabha village Virdwal is a mushroom cultivater and nursery grower. He said: “I have installed a polynet house in a 200sq m area, and I am generating a profit of Rs2 lakh annually by growing just two crops — seedless cucumber and capsicum.”
From mushroom cultivation in 100 tonnes compost, he sells 50 tonnes to other farmers. He said: ‘This is a very easy and healthy practice. Apart from this, chillies, capsicum, onions, tomatoes, and brinjals are supplied to farmers for 600 acres of land covering Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Punjab. “KVK Rauni and PAU are the biggest supporters in addressing my issues and concerns,” he said.
Gurvinder Singh Sandhu from Tarn Taran is another progressive farmer who grows vegetables and fruits in his 27 acres land. Another farmer, Sarabjeet Singh Dhillon from Mansa, is being awarded for the produce of gladiolus.
