PATNA: About 15 companies of Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Railway Protection Special Force (RPSF) are likely to be deployed for the Lok Sabha election to be held in Bihar from April 11 to May 19. Sources said deployment of the railway armed forces is likely to affect the routine duty of the RPF and RPSF, including train escort duty in Danapur division of the East Central Railway (ECR).
Danapur RPF commandant Chandra Mohan Mishra told this newspaper on Monday that the RPF and RPSF personnel have been engaged in the escort duty of about 70 mail and express trains either originating or passing through the division every day. “They are also involved in checking the incidents of hosepipe disconnection (HPD) and alarm chain pulling (ACP),” he said.
About six companies of RPSF and one company of the RPF from Danapur and other divisions of the ECR were deployed on the 2014 Lok Sabha election duty. Over 300 passenger trains are being escorted by RPF and RPSF men in all the five divisions of the ECR. Besides, they are also engaged in ticket-checking and other safety measures in each division of the ECR, sources said.
Railways has specially put RPSF personnel on escort duty of the long distance mail and express trains in the division. “Incidents of ACP and HPD on the running trains have been checked by the alert RPSF, particularly in Danapur division. Deployment of RPSF men on poll duty could affect punctuality of mail and express trains in the division,” a senior RPF officer said.
According to sources, railway yards are more vulnerable to thefts and pilferages. “Deployment of the RPSF and RPF personnel on election duty for about a month will create a piquant situation for railways to ensure foolproof protection to its property in the yards as well as passengers’ security in its five other divisions,” the RPF personnel said.
Meanwhile, railways has decided to review security measures following deployment of RPSF and RPF personnel on election duty. Railway staff working on night duty at different stations will be put on alert to remain vigilant at their respective places to ensure safety to railway property and security to passengers on running trains.
