Hrusikesh Mohanty | TNN | Mar 14, 2019, 04:16 ISTBerhampur: Women voters will decide the fate of candidates in three assembly constituencies (all reserved for Scheduled Tribe candidate) in Kandhamal district because they far outnumber the men in these areas. The three assembly segments, Phulbani, Baliguda and G.Udayagiri are all parts of Kandhamal Lok Sabha constituency.
According to the revised draft electoral roll published by the chief electoral officer, there are 2,57,856 male voters, 2,71,909 women and 55 voters belong to the third gender. The voters sex ratio in the district is 1,054, sources said.
In Phulbani assembly segment, the voter sex ratio stands at 1,041, while the total number of male and female voters is 90,450 and 94,181 respectively. There are nine other voters in the constituency, sources said.
Similarly in the Baliguda segment, the number of male voters are 73,545, while there are 78,439 women and nine others. In G.Udayagiri, there are 1,93,153 voters. Out of them, 93,825 are men, 99,289 are women and 39 others, sources said.
At present, two segments, Phulbani and Baliguda, are held by the ruling BJD, while the Congress candidate was elected from G.Udayagiri in 2014. The Lok Sabha member of Kandhamal is Pratyusha Rajeshwari Singh of the BJD.
Since the number of women voters are more, women aspirants are lobbying hard for the party tickets from BJD, BJP and Congress. “I am keen to contest again from Kandhamal. But it will depend on the party chief,” Singh, the scion of Nayagarh royal family.
She was elected to the Lok Sabha in the by-election held in October 2014 after the death of her husband Hemendra Chandra Singh, who held the seat.
