In a first, the Central Railway will install hotspots on local trains, through which passengers can be able to access movies, soap operas, and audio-video songs for free inside compartments.
According to Hindustan Times, the zonal railway will be providing hotspots — locations that offer internet access over Wi-Fi — in Mumbai’s local trains. The commuters will get access to the preloaded content in the hotspots by downloading a mobile application. The Railways are currently running trails and will introduce the system in all trains by July 2019. A senior CR official told the leading daily, “The tender processing will be undertaken to post the trial at Kurla railway carshed. The hotspots will then be introduced in the local trains. It would take four months for the complete procedure.”
The mobile application which will be introduced by the Central Railway will have an option to select their preferred language and stream the loaded videos and movies. Even the Western Railway is working on introducing free WiFi facility to its commuters. Currently, the same kind of infotainment system is installed in Tejas Express, the only difference is that there are LCD screens installed in the train.
