MOHALI: A 20-year-old woman was allegedly harassed by a youth in the district. According to the woman, the accused has been stalking and harassing her from the last four years but still cops failed to register an FIR in the case.

In her complaint to the police, the woman stated that on February 28, when she had gone out for some work the accused stalked her and allegedly harassed her near her house. The woman went to the police station to register her complaint, however the cops asked the woman to compromise with the accused.

Stalking is a crime and should be tackled accordingly. Instead of suggesting a compromise, it’s the duty of the cops to act against the person who is persistently trying to maintain contact and exercise control over the victim. Who will be responsible if the behaviour of the stalker deteriorates and he resorts to some hostile act? This unwanted attention is an obsessive form of harassment. If the police are inert, the victim could do well to approach a body like the women’s panel.

The youth continued to harass the woman and the incident of stalking was recorded in CCTV camera. According to the sources in police department, the accused and the victim were schoolmates and the youth has been harassing her since then.

Regarding this, a complaint was given to the cops in 2015 by the woman but no case was registered by the cops. Since then, a number of station house officers had joined the same police station but no one agreed to register the complaint.

The woman's father said, "In 2015, the cops forced us to compromise with the accused. Now again we have lodged a complaint with the police on February 5. But yet again we were told to do the same thing."

He said after compromising with the accused he again harassed his daughter and followed her on February 27. The next day he came near their house and forcefully intercepted his daughter and somehow his daughter managed to flee the spot.

Later he came at their house on a motorcycle and forcefully entered at the woman's house and forced her to accept his proposal of marriage. The woman raised an alarm and her family members and neighbours gathered at the spot but the accused managed to flee the spot on his motorcycle.

Regarding this, the woman had again given a complaint at the police station. But again the cops failed to take any action.

The woman's father alleged, "Police asked us to visit the police station every day and then asked us to come the next day as well. It has become difficult for my daughter to step out of the house due to fear of the accused. She even fears to go to college."

Station house officer (SHO), said they have received the complaint and did not register a case. However, they failed to provide a legit reason for the same. Senior superintendent of police, (SSP), did not respond despite repeated attempts.

Cops say bring proof

Instead of investigating the matter, the cops asked victim to bring proof that she was harassed by the accused, said woman's father. The incident was captured in CCTV cameras installed at a nearby area but the cops are yet to register a case, he added.
