Cameron Hawthorn recently released the video for his song “Dancing in the Living Room,” and used the video as a platform for further coming out to his fans
Country singer Cameron Hawthorn’s latest music video starts as a heartwarming ode to dancing at home with a loved one — and ends with something even more special.
The musician recently released the video for his song “Dancing in the Living Room,” and used the video as a platform for addressing his sexuality to his fans.
The sweet clip features Hawthorn playing guitar on the screen of a black-and-white TV as various couples (including an older and younger heterosexual couple, as well as a lesbian couple) dance to his music in their living rooms.
As the video wraps up, Hawthorn leaves his gig alone, but heads home to find his partner waiting for him. The two embrace, and share a sweet dance together in their living room.
Ahead of the release, Hawthorn wrote on Instagram that he dreamed of making the video after writing the song, but wasn’t sure if he ever would.
“I’m extremely proud to release this today,” he wrote.
After its release, Hawthorn said he was thrilled by his fans’ positive reactions.
“I’m so beyond happy by all of the love pouring in for ‘Dancing in the Living Room.’ Wow,” he wrote. “It has been an absolute delight reading your comments and messages. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Truly means the world ❤️.”
The singer told The Advocate that he penned the tune as a way of capturing how special it is for a couple to share a dance, something he and his boyfriend didn’t always get to do in public.
“I remember always thinking how special it was to dance freely with my boyfriend in the living room of our apartment – being gay, it’s not as easy to dance as a couple in public together as it is for a straight couple,” he said. “I wanted to express how special that moment is for a couple, when it’s just the two of you in the privacy of your own four walls.”
Hawthorn first came out publicly in November 2018 after being inspired by the film Boy Erased, about a gay teenager whose parents pressure him into attending a conversion therapy program, and Bohemian Rhapsody, a biopic about gay Queen frontman Freddie Mercury.
“I saw [Boy Erased] with one of my friends who is gay. This movie is about standing up for who you are in the face of people who want to deny you of your truth. My friend does that each and every day … But you see, I’m also gay,” he wrote.
“And I haven’t felt like I could say that proudly until very recently. My journey getting here was taken many years and hasn’t been easy. There has been a lot of confusion, doubt, heartbreak and pain along the way. But also a lot of freedom, openness, and love. I’m so happy that I can finally stand proud in being who I am. And owning that whole-heartedly.”
