Between the period 2012 and 2017, the inbound tourism to Osaka went five-fold which is faster than visits to Tokyo.

This was as the city lured low-cost carriers and promoted itself as a base to visit 25 World Heritage sites in Kyoto and Nara.

To keep up with the sudden influx of big spending tourist, mostly from China cashless payment systems like Alipay and WeChat were installed. The developers and retailers wanted to build new hotels and expand the floor space.

Visitors wish to spend more on services like makeup consulting, maternity goods, and other cheaper items and tourism has entered a new phase now and there is now not much load on luxury brands .

To provide a permanent boost to the economy of the Kansai region around Osaka the city is preparing to build a large casino resort.

Takeshi Yamaguchi, associate director of research at real estate consulting firm CBRE in Osaka said that Osaka was running a full speed on tourism and now they are moving towards sustainability.
