PUNE: The Hadapsar police on Monday arrested land dealer Rajendra More (40) for allegedly driving a 33-year-old dairy businessman to suicide.
The police said Swapnil Sapkal hanged himself from a ceiling fan at his rented residence in Gondhalenagar, Hadapsar, on Sunday afternoon. The police added that in his suicide, Saplak had named More and two police officers — an inspector and an assistant inspector — as those responsible for his death.
He had also send a WhatsApp message to his wife, sister and brother-in-law, naming the three men before committing suicide, the police said.
Deputy commissioner of police (Zone V) Prakash Gaikwad said, “I have ordered ACP (Hadapsar division) Sunil Deshmukh to probe the police officers’ role. We will check if there was any negligence in probing Sapkal’s complaint application against Rajendra More.”
Senior inspector of Hadapsar police Sunil Tambe said Sapkal had bought 1.5 guntha of land from More in Phursungi for Rs20 lakh in 2017. Soon, Sapkal realized that More had sold a plot belonging to his brother.
“Sapkal filed a complaint application with the Hadaspar police against More, as the land dealer refused to return his money. Sapkal had taken a bank loan to purchase the land. After concluding that the dispute was ‘civil’ in nature, the inquiry officer sent a letter to Sapkal and told him to move the civil court. The businessman also filed a case against More, alleging that a cheque provided by the latter had bounced,” the officer said.
After Sapkal’s death, his family demanded action against the police officers for allegedly not conducting a “proper inquiry” into his complaint.
“We showed them the inquiry papers and told them to file a complaint against More. The inspector named in the suicide note was not posted with the Hadapsar police in 2017,” Tambe said. “The inspector has denied meeting Sapkal after being transferred to Hadapsar in 2018. Saplak had met the assistant inspector during pendency of his complaint application. We have registered an FIR against More,” he said.
