The Chennai District Election Office has identified 580 polling stations as vulnerable and critical. The Election Commission is likely to approve more than 3,700 polling stations for the district for the Lok Sabha election.
Chennai Corporation Commissioner and District Election Officer G. Prakash said the work on confidence-building measures will begin in all areas.
Following a final mapping of vulnerability, the police and election officials will increase the frequency of visits to neighbourhoods for initiating confidence-building measures. Police patrolling will also begin in the vulnerable areas, officials said.
The election officials will also focus on certain segments of voters vulnerable to threat and intimidation. Along with enforcement officials, they will develop reliable contact points within the vulnerable community.
The police have also started collecting information on the susceptibility of electors to be influenced by persons in relation to the exercise of the right to vote. The election officials have tracked such persons in various neighbourhoods of the city, officials said.
Monday deadline
Meanwhile, Chennai Corporation teams have also started removing banners and graffiti that violated the model code of conduct.
The Corporation has ordered the removal of banners, posters and graffiti in all the Parliamentary constituencies of the district. “We have set a deadline of 5 p.m. on Monday for removal of all the graffiti,” said Mr. Prakash. “Residents will get access to technology to take corrective action well in advance. We have started training officials to use the C-Vigil app for tracking complaints made by residents on model code violations,” said an official.
