Begins surprise checks of vehicles, monitoring those with history of drug abuse

As part of the newly launched Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Task (ADAPT), the District Anti-Narcotics Special Action Force (DANSAF) has begun surprise inspections of vehicles and monitoring the movement of those with a history of drug-related offences.

For flash checks along the borders of the Kozhikode city police district, plainclothesmen had been deployed, K.V. Prabhakaran, Assistant Commissioner (Narcotic Cell), said.

Vigil

The vigil is part of a Statewide action plan to suppress the demand and supply of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.

DANSAF would report daily actions to the Kerala Anti-Narcotics Special Action Force (KANSAF) for better coordination of the drive, he added.

Mr. Prabhakaran, who is the nodal officer of ADAPT in Kozhikode city police limit, said the list of about 164 persons who were caught for various narcotic cases, was now available with the squad members to ensure proper vigil.

Cyber cell

The Cyber Cell too would work closely with DANSAF to track details of those placed under surveillance, he told The Hindu.

The project, which was launched last week, will seek the support of informers to track the movement of drug peddlers.

A WhatsApp number (6238488686) has been made available for those who want to provide confidential information to the narcotic cell.

The squad members have been given specific instructions to check late night services of long distance buses. Parcel booking offices and parcel service vehicles will be brought under surveillance.

Enforcement squads

The cooperation of other enforcement squads attached to the Excise and Railway Protection Force will be ensured to gain better results.

The dog squad will also be made part of the checking drive in the district.

Police said there would be efforts on the part of the department to rehabilitate young drug addicts with the support of various private and public service providers.

Directions

Directions were issued to Station House Officers to identify such services and make it available for the needy referred by the DANSAF, they added.
