An assistant professor of a private college in Greater Noida succumbed to injuries at a hospital on Monday night, a day after she allegedly attempted to end her life at the teachers’ hostel in Knowledge Park of Greater Noida.

The assistant professor was identified as 24-year-old Ruby Kushwaha, who was employed at the biotechnology department of Noida Institute of Engineering and Technology (NIET) in Knowledge Park.

According to the police, the woman was living at the teachers’ hostel of NIET and on the afternoon of March 10, she allegedly hanged herself from a fan inside her room. Kushwaha, who was from Mhow in Madhya Pradesh, was married to Saurabh Jain, who is preparing for his civil services examination in Mysore, Karnataka.

“The woman used to stay alone at her hostel room and on March 10, she hanged herself from the ceiling fan. However, her hostel mates saw her in time and rescued her by breaking the door. She was then brought to Yatharth Hospital in Greater Noida where she was put on ventilator support as her condition was serious.

“However, she succumbed to injuries on Monday and the body was sent for a post mortem examination. We are awaiting its results and due action will be taken as per procedure,” Arvind Pathak, station house officer, Knowledge Park police station, said.

Police said that prima facie, the case appears to be one of discord between the husband and wife.

They said Kushwaha was married to Jain for more than two years and the couple had no children.

No case has been filed against the husband, the police added. “We have not found any suicide note. The family has been informed and no case has been filed yet,” Pathak said.

Dr Sanil Kapoor, medical superintendent of Yatharth Hospital, said, “The patient was brought to our hospital on March 10 around 3.40pm with a case of cardio-respiratory attack in an extremely serious condition. We provided her prolonged cardio-respiratory treatment and revived her the same day. However, she succumbed to injuries on March 11 evening despite our efforts.”

Kushwaha had joined NIET College as an assistant professor in December, 2018 and was staying at the on-campus hostel. The classes at the college were suspended on Tuesday after news of her death.

“Kushwaha was part of our faculty since December, 2018 and her accommodation was in the college’s hostel premises. We are grieved by the loss and we stand in solidarity with her parents and family at this moment,” a representative of NIET said.
