CCTV footage shows her holding on to bike as robbers move ahead

A 53-year-old woman was dragged on the ground for 20 meters by bike-borne snatchers in Janakpuri on International Women’s Day, said the police on Monday.

The incident was captured in a CCTV installed at a shop in the area. In the CCTV footage, the woman was seen holding on to the bike as the robbers continued to move ahead. The video footage shows bystanders looking at the woman’s ordeal, but no one came forward to her help.

Shobha Kanwar, an owner of a school in Najafgarh, said that on March 8, she went to her friend’s place in Janakpuri for a get together. She was waiting at the society gate for her friend to arrive when two youth on a motorcycle tried to snatch her purse. She resisted and refused to leave the bag.

“I was dragged on the busy road, but no one come forward to save me. The people ignored my screams. After the snatchers left, I got up and found my mobile phone that dropped out of the purse during the scuffle,” said Ms. Kanwar.

She received injuries on chest, thighs and shoulders. “I called my son and went to a hospital. The city is unsafe. A woman was dragged on the middle of the road and men around me were just watching it.,” said Mr Kanwar.

The police said they have registered an FIR. “We have got strong leads in the case. The snatchers will be arrested soon. The victim had ₹20,000 in her purse which was robbed by snatchers,” said a senior police officer.
