In the last few years, Huawei has been doing quite well for itself on the consumer front. The company has had many successful devices and even unveiled a foldable smartphone recently. Now, in an interview with a German publication, Huawei CEO Richard Yu spoke about the company’s plans for the future, allegations by US government, and more.
In the interview, Yu revealed some of the future plans for the company. He believes that Huawei will become the smartphone market leader in the next year. It will surpass Samsung thanks to its superior 5G technology, he says. The company is already pretty close to Samsung in terms of smartphone shipments.
When asked about the high cost of the Mate X foldable phone, Yu replied that within the next two years, the cost will go down. It plans on making $1,200 foldable phones that will be similar and just as powerful as the Mate X. He believes that the prices should even drop lower than $1,000 in a few years. According to him, in the next five years, foldable phones will become the standard.
He also stated that the company is working on AR glasses that will provide a virtual screen size of 100 to 200-inches to customers. Huawei is also working on improving cameras, battery life, charging and more. The company has also developed its own operating system for mobile phones and other devices. However, Huawei would prefer using Google’s and Microsoft’s OS instead. When questioned about offering its Kirin chipsets to other manufacturers, Yu stated that there are no plans to do anything of such sorts.
The interview was mainly about the espionage charges from the US government and how other western nations also believe that Huawei could be a security risk. He defends all this and states that there’s nothing to worry about. Huawei has super high safety standards when it comes to both hardware and software. There is no backdoor in its technology and Huawei believes that the allegations are only political. The company sued the US government recently stating that the charges are unconstitutional.
Separately, on Weibo, Yu said the brand has shipped 10 million units of the Mate 20 series. Notably, the Mate 20 series took half the time as the Mate 10 lineup to hit this mark. However, there is no detailed break-up of the number of units shipped in the series, which includes the Mate 20, Mate 20 lite, Mate 20 Pro, Mate 20X, and Mate 20 RS Porsche Design.
