Nagpur: Around 200 undergraduate and some postgraduate summer exams conducted by the Nagpur University (NU) have been put off because of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections on April 11 in Vidarbha.
Pro-vice chancellor Pramod Yeole told TOI that though polling is on April 11, they need to reschedule exams for one day prior and after the polls. “The revised timetable would be available in a couple of days. Since exam centres are polling booths and university staff too would be deployed, we would need to shift exam scheduled for April 10, 11 and 12,” he said. Besides the city, colleges from Wardha, Bhandara and Gondia are also affiliated to the NU.

The affected exams of non-professional BA and BCom courses are likely to be held soon after the last paper of the respective courses. The under professional courses like BE and Pharmacy are being planned on Sundays, if there is no overlapping with competitive or other exams.

Meanwhile, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) too has rescheduled the CA exams in view of the general elections spanning April-May. The CA examinations were initially scheduled from May 2 to 17. The examinations would now be held from May 27 to June 12.

The NU summer exams started on February 28 while the ECI announced poll dates on March 10. So far, the NU is working only on shifting the April exams while it is yet to calculate the number of exams to be affected for May 23 which is the counting date.

Yeole said April exams were priority for them and the exam section is working on it. “It was already expected that the timetable would need rescheduling as polls were due. But we need to prepare the timetable two months in advance. Still, the students have a month to follow the changed plan,” he said.

Regarding May 23 when the poll results would be announced, Yeole said the timetable for several courses was still in process. So, it may not have big impact. “We will soon check how many exams are getting affected in May,” he said.

MBA student Nikhil Rajwade said he would be hit badly. “I would now get less time to study. I had a backlog from first semester which was on April 11. I have to study for this and my current semester simultaneously,” he said.

For second year BSc student Ranee Nagtode, the change in exam means putting off family vacation. “We were too keen go out of station but now the plan is disturbed. I hope it is not pre-poned. A date after last paper on April 20 is welcome,” she said.

CA aspirants are rejoicing the postponing of their exams. Shubham Jain said,” I am happy. Time is never enough for a CA exam. It is always good to get more time to prepare,” he said.
