Project holds cops accountable for keeping stations clean

The State Police Chief has directed all District Police Chiefs to implement ‘Kaizen’, an initiative by the Kozhikode City Police to clean up police stations and their surroundings, across the State by July 1.

An action plan prepared during the project launch in Kozhikode city has been sent to Range Inspector Generals of Police and District Police Chiefs to be considered as a model. The directive issued by the State Police Chief also notes that Kaizen, which means ‘continuous improvement’ in Japanese, is an impressive and useful project.

Rating system

Kaizen uses a rating system to hold police officers accountable for keeping stations clean and the best performing station will be selected for the best police station title. Similarly, the police station that stands in the last position will be graded the poorly managed station. The police officers who come up with useful suggestions will be given good service entry.

The initiative, introduced by former City Police Chief K. Sanjay Kumar Gurudin last month, mainly aims at making the police station an inspiring workspace by clearing unnecessary files and piled up junk. The Station House Officers concerned will be primarily responsible for identifying work, its proper division among subordinates and time-bound completion. They will also have to submit photographs as proof to the District Police Chief.

Though the improvement of internal administration is also part of Kaizen, the initial focus will be on improving physical infrastructure and facilities. Separate teams will be formed to execute the cleaning and beautification work covering the District Police Chief’s office, District Headquarters Camp, traffic units, control room, special cells, police stations and Ministerial staff offices.

Final stage

In Kozhikode city, the project is in the final stage of implementation. The Nadakkavu police station has nearly completed the beautification work and clearing of junk. The construction of a lawn is in progress to make the station more appealing.
