You don't have to worry about tire punctures during your trips anymore.
The new Ford Explorer is already one of the best vehicles you can buy for big family trips. It’s roomy, comfortable, and comes with a plethora of accessories that make your adventures more pleasant. Now, Ford, in cooperation with Michelin, is introducing another cool feature that will improve your overall experience behind the wheel – self-sealing tires.
The tires are designed to withstand common nail and screw punctures, and self-seal to “dramatically slow the rate at which air leaks.” The rubber seals up to 90 percent of tread punctures with a diameter of up to 0.25 inches. Michelin estimates the loss of air pressure slows to less than 15 pounds per square inch per week. Of course, real-life results may vary.

Ford is proud to announce the 2020 Exporer is the world’s first SUV to get the Michelin Selfseal tires, which will be available as standard on the Platinum and Limited Hybrid four-wheel-drive versions. You can get them optionally on Limited two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive models with tire size for all variants being 255/55/20.

The Blue Oval explains the main advantage of the self-healing tires is the fact that you don’t have to make dangerous stops by the road to replace a flat tire, which reduces the waste of time during your trip and improves overall safety. Also, it helps keep your vehicle under full control in the case of a punctured rubber.

Michelin Selfseal tires seal 90 percent of tread punctures up to a quarter-inch in diameter, slowing the loss of air pressure to less than 15 pounds per square inch per week. Results are based on Michelin internal analytical testing. Actual results may vary.
Explorer is the first SUV in the world to offer Michelin Selfseal tires, which are standard on Explorer Platinum and Explorer Limited Hybrid four-wheel-drive models, and optional on Explorer Limited two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive models. Tire size for all models is 255/55R-20. All Explorer models are equipped with a spare tire.
If a nail or screw punctures a Selfseal tire and remains in place, the sealant surrounds the object to help seal the puncture and avoid air loss. If the object punctures the tire and comes back out, the sealant is designed to fill tread punctures up to a quarter-inch in diameter.
The sealant is designed to enable drivers to continue their journey uninterrupted. If a tread puncture or low pressure is detected, the tire should be inspected and repaired by a qualified tire professional.
