Code of conduct hits sewage water work among many projects
Proshun Chakraborty | tnn | Mar 12, 2019, 07:18 ISTNagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s plan to enhance capacity of 200mld sewerage water hit a roadblock after code of conduct came into force. The Pench project department’s proposal submitted before the standing committee meeting convened on Monday was called off.
Standing committee chairman Pradip Pohane had convened a meeting on Monday and subsequently, the civic administration submitted 37 proposals including appointing private operator to maintain city’s traffic signals installed at 157 junctions.
However, the meeting had to be called off due to enforcement of code of conduct from Sunday evening. This has further delayed the NMC’s ambitious project to enhance the treatment of sewage from 200mld to 350mld.
At present, NMC is treating 340mld water of sewage water by two 5mld treatment plants each set up at Pili river and Nag river, 200mld and 130mld at Bhandewadi. Of the treated sewage water, NMC is supplying around 330mld to Mahagenco, while 10mld is being released into the nullah itself.
Earlier, NMC had planned to give the enhancement of the 200mld treatment plant to existing contractor Vishvaraj Environment Private Limited (VEPL). Later, the NMC invited fresh tender for the project and VEPL was shortlisted for it. The department submitted a proposal to empower the municipal commissioner Abhijit Bangar to give letter of intent to VEPL. But now the proposal has been delayed.
Meanwhile, Bangar has directed NMC officials to strictly follow the election code of conduct. He told the officials that no new tender should be floated during this period. However, works for which work order have been issued will continue. Maintenance works will also continue. There should be no effect on water supply and health services, he told NMC officials.
Bangar also instructed the officials to remove all banners, posters and flakes of political parties from the city.
The civic body has also received requisition of manpower from the district election office. As per the first letter, the civic body has been asked to spare 800 staffers for the Lok Sabha poll on April 11. For the first time, the election department has also sought deployment of deputy municipal commissioners and assistant municipal commissioners as nodal officers.
