A 25-year-old woman died at a hospital in Greater Noida on Tuesday, three days after she was admitted after allegedly attempting to take her life by hanging herself. Police have booked the woman’s husband for dowry harassment in the case.

The woman was identified as Roshni, from Baral village in Bulandshahr, who lived with her husband, Kapil, and three children in Maecha village in Dadri of Greater Noida.

According to the police, the incident had taken place on the evening of March 9. Some of her neighbours who had had spotted her trying to do so had rescued her and admitted her to the Sharda Hospital in Greater Noida. “We had not found any suicide note from spot. The woman had taken the extreme step when she was alone in the house with her infant child. Based on the complaint sent by the woman’s parents, we booked her husband Kapil, from Maecha village, under Indian Penal Code sections 498 A, 304 B, 323 for cruelty to woman by husband, death of woman due to bodily injury within seven years of her marriage, and assault, respectively. We have also booked him under sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act,” Ram Sen Singh, SHO, Dadri Police station, said.

The woman had married Kapil, working as an electrician, in December, 2013. The couple has a five-year-old daughter, a three-year-old son and a six-months-old girl.

According to the family of the woman, she had been beaten up by her husband in the past over dowry demands. “At the time of their wedding, we had given an amount of ₹50,000. However, few months later, he started demanding a motorcycle and an inverter. When we said we would not be able to fulfil his demands, he started beating Roshini. Our daughter had tried to end her life in the past as well by pouring kerosene over herself but we had not lodged any complaint at the time,” Omwati, Roshini’s mother, alleged.

A representative of Sharda Hospital said, “The woman was brought to our hospital on March 9 in a brain-dead state and was immediately put on ventilator. However, she succumbed to injuries caused by hanging on Tuesday.”
