Three held for trying to extort Rs 5 lakh a female doctor
tnn | Mar 13, 2019, 04:00 ISTSurat: Police arrested three persons including a lawyer from Chowk Bazaar police station area on Tuesday for allegedly attempting to extort Rs 5 lakh from a female doctor. The accused demanded the amount as hush money, threatening to defame her by sharing information to the media that she practices privately along with her government job.
Police arrested Kushal Sheladiya, a lawyer and his two associates, Manish Bhuva and Sanjay Parmar, based on a complaint filed by her husband, Arvind Sharma, a doctor from New Civil Hospital (NCH). The complainant said that the accused started issuing repeated threats to his wife Rakhi, who is an employee of the health department and working at Karanj Health Centre, since March 2. The accused were booked under various sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC) including extortion. Following specific information police first nabbed Sheladiya and during interrogation, revealed about the other two,who were also arrested.
Cops said that Rakhi received a call on her mobile on March 2 and the caller said he wanted to talk to her regarding her private practice and asked her to meet him near D Mart on Cauaseway Road in Singanpore area.
She went to the designated spot to gather more details and Sheladiya introduced himself as K D Patel. He told the woman that he has information about her private practice along with her government job and threatened to share the information with media which will defame her. Stating that this will damage her career, he demanded her hush money of Rs 5 lakh. She refuted his accusation and also denied to pay the money. Sheladiya and his henchmen then continued to harass her by issuing threats over phone. On March 8, the two associates also went to meet her at Karanj Health Centre where they repeated the threat.
