“My family thought I was engaged until I told them,” says Hannah Godwin
To say Hannah Godwin was blindsided when Colton Underwood broke up with her on The Bachelor before their fantasy suite date would be a vast understatement.
“I thought it was us the entire time,” says Godwin, who was sent home, along with runner-up Tayshia Adams, so that Underwood, 27, could fight for a second chance with Cassie Randolph. “I valued our relationship so much and I didn’t even get the chance to even have another date with him. He gave everybody else that chance and I thought, why not me?’”

Echoes Adams: “It was a lot to take in. I didn’t know what went wrong. I was really hurt. I invested a lot of time and heart into that relationship.”
Once they got home, both women made an effort to move on, as difficult as it was.

“My family thought I was engaged until I told them,” Godwin tells People. “It was really hard to tell them what had happened. I was in denial for a long time.”
For her part, “It didn’t hit me right away,” Adams admits to People. “I didn’t really hang out with anyone for two to three weeks. Watching the show was fine, until the last couple episodes. I couldn’t even watch the last one.”
But ultimately, “the hardest part is over,” says Adams of seeing Underwood on Monday night. “I just wanted to make sure he was happy. His heart was always my priority.”

Adds Godwin: “I felt really empowered being able to talk to him about a moment that I had been holding onto for months. There are still some open wounds. But I don’t want to be bitter anymore. And I’m ready to live in the present again.”
As for dating?
“I haven’t gone on any dates yet,” says Adams. “I’m happy and content in my life right now. I have a new spark for life. And I’m looking forward to the next phase.”
Says Godwin: “I’m still on the single train. But I don’t want to date around for fun anymore. I’m stronger now. And I can handle anything that is sent my way.”
Part 2 of The Bachelor‘s finale airs Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
