Superhero film Captain Marvel has had an incredible opening at the Indian box office. The film has grossed Rs 48 crore in its opening weekend.

According to trade analyst Taran Adarsh, Captain Marvel made Rs 16.19 crore on Sunday, in addition to Rs 15.49 crore on Friday and Rs 16.79 crore on Saturday, which makes it the biggest solo opening for a superhero film in India. He wrote, “#CaptainMarvel grabs a major chunk of market share, despite mixed reports... Fantastic weekend places it amongst the biggest openers [#Hollywood]... Fri 13.01 cr, Sat 14.10 cr, Sun 13.60 cr [affected due to cricket match]. Total: ₹ 40.71 cr. India biz. Gross BOC: ₹ 48.47 cr.”

The film has made $455 million (Rs 3100 crore) globally, including a $153 million US opening. China was the second biggest foreign territory, followed by South Korea, the UK and Brazil.

Captain Marvel has registered the fifth biggest opening international weekend opening weekend of all time, and sixth largest worldwide debut ever, according to Box Office Mojo. India is the film’s 11th largest territory.

Previous Marvel films such as Thor: Ragnarok, Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War have also been massively successful in India. As a comparison, Warner Bros Wonder Woman made close to $230 million in its opening weekend worldwide.

The film has been noticeably less enthusiastically received critically, however. It currently has an 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics pointing out the lack of originality and stakes. Brie Larson and Samuel L Jackson’s central performance was more warmly received.

Larson will reprise her role in the upcoming Avengers: Endgame, which will act as both a conclusion to this phase of the franchise as well as an introduction to a new chapter.
