1988 Mercedes 560 SEC Convertible Conversion Is For Acquired Tastes

The Mercedes-Benz 560 SEC still looks [email protected] more than 3 decades later after its launch, and if you’re a fan of this classic S-Class, then you might be tempted by this gorgeous 1988 example that’s for sale.

RMSothebys has it listed for their Essen auction in Germany that takes place on April 11-12. It sports a black exterior on top of a grey leather interior and has come to Europe straight from the United States, where it was initially shipped.

At this point, you have noticed the convertible body style, but this isn’t how it left the factory. The auction house states that it was converted early in its life with a power soft top, without being able to tell exactly when and by whom.

Still, everything appears to be in place, functioning just like it should, which makes it “perhaps the ideal car for those looking to motor around in typical “80s splendor”, as per description that provides nothing else, except for the fact that it passed through a large collection in the Cayman Islands before being exported to Switzerland.

Now, for the good part: back when it was new, the Mercedes-Benz 560 SEC used to be one of the most expensive cars. Today, this model sells for between €5,000 ($5,615) and €50,000 ($56,150), depending on how well it was preserved and the number displayed on its odometer.

As for this one, if the auction house’s estimates turn out to be correct, then it should fetch between €10,000-€15,000 ($11,230-$16,845), which would make it about as expensive as a new supermini. It’s also offered without reserve, so don’t forget your cheque book home.
