AHMEDABAD: Cyber crime units of districts and cities across the state have been directed to keep an eye on cyberspace, especially messaging applications, on which rumours are spread.

The police are on alert ahead of the general election. A senior police official said that social messaging applications are being used by elements who want to spread rumours or fake news to disturb the law and order situation in the state.

During the 2017 state assembly election, many fake lists of candidates went viral and created chaos. “Even hate speeches are being uploaded on social media,” said a senior police official. This year, a day before the 2019 election schedule was announced, a fake list of transfers of senior police officials went viral. A top police official attached with election duty said that online mischief-makers will face strict legal action.

A senior cyber cell official said separate teams will be formed to monitor social media. “One team will monitor different social media platforms through open source and swing into action if they come across objectionable material or material that violates the model code of conduct,” he said.

A top cyber cell official said that police have written to service providers telling them to remove objectionable material.
