A classified ads website has revealed Melbourne's sauciest suburb, where hundreds of people are looking or casual sex.

Locanto, a classifieds site, revealed there 1376 ads from people who are looking to hook-up with other people in Melbourne.

Ringwood, in Melbourne's east, topped the list with 537 profiles of people looking for a casual hook-up.

Box Hill had 189 profiles, while Doncaster was not far behind with 134 requests for casual sex

In north-east Melbourne, both Greensborough and Eltham had a total of 136 profiles of people looking for a good time, while Heidelberg and 117, and Mernda had 75 requests.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman told The Herald Sun that people who are looking for casual sex usually have a positive experience no matter their age or gender.

However, she did warn users to be wary of who they meet up and ensure they are being safe.

'It is important that users understand that the internet isn't the same as the face-to-face environment,' she said.

'You can't be sure that the person you are speaking to is who they say they are.'

'If you are considering meeting someone that you have met online ensure that it is in a public location, that someone knows where you are and remember to trust your doubts about people you're meeting who don't resemble their pictures or if you have a suspicion that someone is being dishonest,' she said.

She also said that the police are there to help if you feel uncomfortable or need help in a bad situation.
