Queerythm to launch a theatre group
TNN | Mar 12, 2019, 04:22 ISTThiruvananthapuram: Queerythm, a city-based collective of persons belonging to the LGBTQ community, is all set to launch a theatre group to promote the talents of its members. The debut performance of the group will be staged at Manaveeyam Veedhi, to coincide with Pride Walk on March 17.
The Pride Walk will be held from University College Junction to Manaveeyam Veedhi. It will be followed by a cultural festival, queer theatre performance and musical night.
This edition of Pride Walk will focus on the theme ‘Let us walk for equality’. It is based on the theme that the theatre group is formed as an inclusive group, including their allies, which the representative of the collective said was needed for acceptance.
The theatre group will function in association with Rang, an art and culture initiative of Queerythm. A theatre workshop led by Sreejith Sundaram will be conducted for interested people. Fifteen people have already registered for the workshop.
Prijith P K, president of Queerythm, said that there is a big change in the mindset of people after the historical SC verdict. “People are more aware and are ready to have a conversation about sexual minorities. Even, when we approach people to invite them for our event, people are willing to associate with us. The change could be seen and we are happy about it. With decriminalisation of IPC 377, our next demand is for the right to marry, inheritance and adoption,” said Prijith.
The collective also plans to form a ‘support group for parents’ of community members. “The support group will be managed by the parents of community members, who will be able to communicate and help parents of the people who are coming out. Also, this edition of the Pride Walk will have more participation from family of the community members,” added Prijith.
