MADURAI
The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Monday mooted the possibility of using technology to identify archaeological sites for excavation.
A Division Bench of Justices N. Kirubakaran and S.S. Sundar, which was hearing a batch of public interest litigation petitions, mooted the possibility of using technology for conducting survey. The PIL pleas were over excavation at Adichanallur and Sivagalai sites in Thoothukudi district and Iraivimangalam and Padiyur sites in Dindigul district.
The court directed the Archaeological Survey of India and the State Department of Archaeology to conduct surveys on the sites to assess their current status and file a report. Also, the court ordered that the State should not grant any permission for sand quarrying at Sivaglai for now, and adjourned the hearing.
