"Our family has never ever showed any disrespect to women and the public. If at all anybody is hurt by Revanna's statement, I apologize. Let us not precipitate it further," Kumaraswamy told reporters.

He also blamed the media for "instigating" his brother to issue such a statement against Sumalatha. "The media asked Revanna as to how correct is it for Sumalatha to contest the election when it's not even a month since her husband died. Revanna had only replied to it. But, they edited the question and telecast only the reply," Kumaraswamy alleged.

He, however, said Revanna should not have got carried away by the media provocation and should have avoided giving such a statement.

Nikhil, JD(S) candidate for Mandya Lok Sabha seat, said Revanna should not have made the comment against Sumalatha who is like a family. "I don't know why my uncle made such remarks. Our party has always respected women and we continue to do so," Nikhil said.

Revanna on Friday had ridiculed Sumalatha's decision to contest the election saying that it was not even a month since her husband died. The remark had evoked a widespread criticism with many people from Mandya threatening to work against the JD(S) in the election.
