PUDUCHERRY: AIADMK whip Vaiyapuri Manikandan on Monday accused Puducherry chief minister V Narayanasamy of violating the model code of conduct by extending freebies to people using the chief minister’s relief fund. The model code of conduct came into force on Sunday after the Election Commission of India announced that Lok Sabha polls would be held in the Union territory on April 18.
In a representation to the chief election commissioner, Manikandan said the chief minister had issued pre-dated cheques to the people to influence them to extend their support to the Congress party in the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls.
“The payments were issued in the form of predated cheques to the public in selected areas of Puducherry region with instruction to realise the cheques immediately. Even though there are no adequate funds in the account, bank authorities have been instructed to wait until sufficient funds are credited in the account,” Manikandan said.
He said bank authorities honour the cheques as and when sufficient funds are available in the account. He charged that the chief minister had been misappropriating relief fund.
He urged the Election Commission of India to intervene and stop the transfer of money from the account managing the chief minister’s relief fund to the beneficiaries until the completion of the Lok Sabha polls.
