NEW DELHI: Congress on Sunday alleged complicity between PM Narendra Modi and fugitive diamantaires Mehul Choksi and Nirav Modi and said it was either a diplomatic failure or a deliberate attempt to protect the fugitive duo which had resulted in India not being able to get them extradited.
Party spokesperson Pawan Khera said Choksi applied for registration of a new company in the UK three days ago even after the Indian government claimed there were red corner and look out notices against him.
“Choksi has said he is a Belgian national and that he has offices in the UAE. India has extradition treaties with both countries. Why then have extradition proceedings been done in Antigua? Does the Modi government know Choksi applied for registration of his company in UK only three days ago? Have the CBI and Enforcement Directorate made any effort to extradite him?” he said.
Congress also alleged that a “powerful person”, who benefited from Choksi, was protecting him.
“Who has benefited from Choksi and who is this important, powerful man who is saving him?” Khera asked.
