CHARMINAR: Graveyards in Old City have become a dumping ground for debris for several landgrabbers who are looking at these properties as potential construction sites. The sight of trucks full of debris covering up graves has become a huge concern for residents in the area and families who have buried their deceased loved ones in these graveyards.
Heritage activists say that the graveyards in Tappachabutra, Saber Nagar, Jhirrah, Sabzi Mandi, Mustaidpura and Jiyaguda have to be protected because if dumping practices are not prohibited, the graves stand in danger of being destroyed.
Mohammed Habeebuddin, a heritage activist told TOI that the graveyards in the aforementioned locations have become an easy target for and grabbers who seek to build structures overnight. The activist alleged that such activities have increased in recent times due to the unavailability of open places elsewhere.
"The graveyards appear to have become an easy target for land grabbers. Almost 13 acres of Imampura graveyards has been grabbed. Similarly, Miya Mustaid graveyard located in Tappachabutra has turned into a garage dump and debris is being dumped over the graves. We fear that some portion of the land is likely to be grabbed if no action is taken immediately,'' said Habeebuddin.
Taking strong exception against concerned authorities, a resident from Mustaidpura, Mohammed Abdul Samad, told TOI that many Waqf properties have already been encroached and now the graveyards appear to be the next target for land grabbers. He insisted that authorities of the Telangana State Waqf Board (TSWB) should carry out an inspection and take immediate to safeguard the endangered graves and also its other properties.
"Many graves are have vanished as a result of this dumping. Structures may come up on this land in future if the authorities are negligent and many graveyard will disappear. I request the TSWB to take immediate steps to ensure the construction of boundary walls to protect the graveyards,'' said Samad.
