ROHTAK: An elderly woman was choked to death in a stampede that occurred outside a private hospital at Rohtak’s Jhang colony on Sunday. Thousands had gathered to collect subsidised packed ration to be handed out by organisers.
The deceased is identified as Guddi Devi, 50, a resident of Kath Mandi in Rohtak. Another woman, identified as Murti Devi of Gohana road in Rohtak, sustained injuries and was admitted to PGIMS Rohtak for treatment.
Thousands, mostly poor people, had come after seeing the advertisements given out by S Dhanwantri and his son Mohit Dhanwantri, promising to distribute wheat, grams and pulses at subsidised rates, police said. The location chosen for the distribution was adjacent to a railway line (Panipat-Rohtak) and, according to officials, no permission was sought to assemble such a big gathering.
The advertisements managed to lure people from even neighbouring districts: Crowd started gathering from as early as 5am on Sunday.
Despite heavy rush, the organisers kept the crowd waiting, as they were busy attending to Congress Rohtak MP Deepender Hooda. After the Congress MP left, the organisers, seeing the milling crowd, decided against distributing subsidised foodgrains as promised. In the ensuing melee, the elderly woman was choked to death. Squeezed in by the angry crowd, she was unable to move or breathe.
Ashok Khurrana, muncipal councillor of ward-10, where the incident took place, said that permission was not obtained by the organisers to hold such event near railway line. According to him, the organisers have been gathering crowd in the said spot for the last six months by issuing advertisements promising subsidised foodgrains.
Station house officer sub-inspector Naresh Kumar said that a case has been registered against Dhanwantri hospital owner Mohit Dhanwantri and his father S Dhanwantri on the complaint of Kapil Kumar, deceased’s son.
Rajkumar Dhanwantri, the younger brother of the accused S Dhanwantri, claimed that they regularly distribute subsidised foodgrains to poor who cannot afford them.
